Sleepy yesterday afternoon - I’ve had too much fun and ran out of works to say until my little rant about flatulence and Covid, which apparently isn;t so far fetched. Nobel or IgNobel prize is pending for my discovery….
I just special ordered a series of 5 Diamond Bottoming Drills also called Diamond Disintegration Drills that are 14” long with 80 grit diamond tips from National Diamond Labs in LA. These will drill the bore, hopefully. The feed rate should be somewhere around 1” every two minutes. I will be attempting to use my current boring setup to do this, where the drill is mounted on a tool holder on the slide rest as the glass rotates. NDL said that a simple spray bottle with the water soluble and rust preventative coolant should work well.
Going to a drill press required that I somehow immobilize the glass, probably in a box filled full of plaster. Also this would require the collets and the coolant adapter adding to my costs.
Speaking of which, I am about to work up my sequential list of expected necessary infrastructure tasks. This list and the list of Tooling plus what I will need for survival over the next 6 months will allow me to budget these expenses. Then I will proceed with my fundraising campaign. The infrastructure includes:
Prepping the 20 X 20 area south of our current wood shed and pouring a 6” thick slab, once I trench and install a 60 amp line to this directly from my meter box. Then we will put up one of these 12 X 16 garages. This will hold the large Pantograph Milling Machine and my kilns. This space will function as my hot shop.
Cleaning out and rearrangement of the back 12 X 20 of my current workshop. I will compact the wood and tool storage/graveyard, fossils and anything else. I have one or two bicycles that I will probably hang from the rafters of the new building until I am ready to part with them, which may be soon. Then some shop furniture, and installation of machinery.
Upgrading the 30 amp service to 50 amp, installing an on-demand water heater for a simple line, as well as a 2 stage grey water drainage. My greywater will have glass particles and diamonds in it.
Wiring, insulation and sheetrock and finally installing the door between the two sides, and installng a door to the outside on the SE Corner.
Before all or of this I have much pruning and cleanup around the outside as we are re-roofing this building around September 15.
Today should be busy as I have so much to do, including a lunch with our newly discovered Kingston cousins with common roots on Block Island, RI.
These are people we’ve met previously who are also North Kitsap Options Program -involved (this is a highly successful alternative school that is embedded within the regular school district. Parent participation including instruction during “mini-classes” is the special sauce. This demonstrates the degree and potential to which all parents should participate in their kids’ education at whatever level. Given the ground-up approach this method has the potential to avoid exceptionalism and exclusivity. Our daughter Lila did very well by this program, as did many others who were struggling financially during the 1990s and 2000s. The program continues to thrive.
