As predicted I have been too busy or too distracted to write anything here over the summer months. Meteorological Summer may be over in the Pacific Northwest (I hope not). Dark rainy days like the one we had yesterday force me to the inside. The last thing I want to do is spend the sunny days in front of the computer writing. When it is too hot or smokey however, I end up sapped and spend too much time watching TikTok and YouTube videos.
Spring was a buildup to get ready for guests from Galicia - my friend Cano and his daughter Lucia. Thus we underwent a major de-clutterization inside and out, and totally rearranged my office and its annex, moving the 3D printers out and the bed back in. Then in late June, our guests arrived and we had a swell visit, including a big music part. Then FiddleTunes.
Afterwards, Cano, Lucia and I traveled down to the coast for a night and then to Medford where my friend Kevin further entertained and transported them. Eventually they made it to t he Grand Canyon during the heat dome, and then back to Berkeley for a workshop and eventually Lark Camp where we met up with them. In the interim before Camp I suffered a lousy time expelling a kidney stone instead of getting a few flutes out the door. I wasn’t at my best at Camp and we had a few crashes and burns - but we made it through. Then recovery afterwards and kind of biding our time until the smoke blew away and the temps became mild.
I think I am ready for Fall. Flute production will continue though at a slower pace to protect my hands. I will be writing more here, and getting my subscription only woodwind making substack going. Mrs. Best’s Keys is underway - the above set of keys pulled off of a flute by Thomas Prowse and made by the original Mrs. Best in mid-19th century London are now molded and soon to be recast in silver. I will be selling the sets of as cast keys to other makers, just like Mrs. Best did, though for $500 and make a little bit of profit that doesn’t wear out my hands. I hope to be making more music - and having friends over for this activity as well. More on all of these topics later. I appreciate the new subscribers and invite more. I’ll be back to my usual silliness soon as there is much to talk about always. Cheers! Casey
